Assam police have launched a fresh operation targeting child marriage cases. In the crackdown, 416 arrests were made, and 335 cases were registered.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X, "Assam continues its fight against child marriage. In Phase 3 of operations launched on the night of Dec 21-22, 416 arrests were made, and 335 cases were registered. The arrested individuals will be produced in court today. We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil!"

Last year, in October, Assam police arrested over 1,000 people in a massive state-wide crackdown against child marriage.


According to state government data, 3,098 individuals were arrested in the first two months of last year under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. Since February 3 of this year, the state has registered 4,363 cases of child marriage.

Sarma had previously stated that child marriage will be eradicated completely from Assam by 2026.

Last year's budget also saw the launch of the 'Mission for Prevention of Child Marriage' in Assam, with an allocation of Rs 200 crore.
