The incident took place at Dongkamokam in West Karbi Anglong where people have been agitating for the last few days demanding eviction against illegal encroachment on protected government lands.
The agitators have also started an indefinite hunger strike on December 16 demanding the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to act against the illegal encroachment immediately.
A police official said that a large number of people came out and blockaded the highway after news spread that those on hunger strike were forcibly taken away by police. The situation turned violent as police came and tried to disburse the agitating people, who resorted to a massive road blockade.
The police official said, “Police resorted to firing to control the situation injuring at least three agitators. The agitated protestors also set on fire the ancestral house of Chief Executive Member of the KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang.”
Additional forces have been rushed to the area to contain the situation. Karbi Anglong is the sixth scheduled area under the constitution of India.
