Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said on Monday out of 1.7 lakh declared illegal foreigners only 467 were repatriated.

Unfurling the national flag at Khanapara on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations, he said, “Since inception up to 31st October 2025, Assam has referred 4,34,922 cases of suspected nationality to the Foreigners’ Tribunals, of which 3,56,714 cases have been disposed of, resulting in 1,69,812 persons being declared illegal foreigners from the specified territory—reflecting the State’s sustained commitment to due process and the rule of law. A total of 467 illegal foreigners (457 convicted foreigners and 10 declared foreigners) have been repatriated to their country of origin through the process of deportation”.

He added that under the modernisation of the Prison Project of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the establishment of a High security jail at Hajo in Kamrup District for 150 inmates is going on.


He added, " There are14 border outposts and 14 patrol posts are operational in close coordination with the BSF and local police along the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar, Sribhumi, Dhubri and South Salmara districts."

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that people have to think and make a choice whether they want 'vote bank politics' or take forward the development journey launched by his government during the last five years.

Assam is going to assembly polls early this year. The Chief Minister said in his address at the Republic Day function in Dibrugarh said, “The State will go to the polls in the next few months, and people must decide whether they want to ''surrender to Bangladeshi Muslims'' or be part of progress and development.”

He said, ''We have decided not to surrender to the Bangladeshi Muslims who have encroached upon huge areas of land and threatened our identity, culture and traditions. We have started the process of reclaiming our land by evicting the encroachers."

Sarma said that his government was committed to protect people's 'maati' (land), 'bheti' (foundation), 'sanskriti' (culture) and 'parichay' (identity) to protect and secure the rights of the future generation.

Bengali speaking Muslims are often referred as Miya Muslims. Muslims comprise 34% of the 3.12 crore population of Assam, of which 4% are indigenous Assamese Muslims and the remaining mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims.
