The disputed site along the Assam-Mizoram border where the recent skirmishes took place has virtually turned into no man’s land with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) compiling a list of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The draft SoPs include a ban on taking pictures of the spot and circulating them on social media, prior permission to be sought by the Assam and Mizoram police from the CRPF to visit the area and intensifying patrolling in the region up to August 15, among others. The draft SOPs, officials said, have been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for approval.

Meanwhile, CRPF teams are escorting vehicles after the Assam-Mizoram highway was blocked. Assam’s Superintendent of Police, Ramandeep Kaur told ET: “Movement of trucks has resumed and security personnel are escorting them from Assam to Mizoram.” More than 1,000 vehicles have moved to Mizoram since Saturday night. Around 300 vehicles have moved towards Assam till Tuesday afternoon.

CRPF has deployed 6 companies while 2 companies have been kept under reserve for any contingency. Paramilitary forces will remain deployed along the four km stretch between Lailapur (Assam) and Vairangtei in Mizoram. No police personnel or locals are allowed within 1 km on each side of the disputed site. SP Kaur added, “The situation along the border is tense, but under control. CRPF has been deployed as a neutral force and has come up with an SOP.”

Another senior government official added, “We will decide on further deployment after August 16 and may withdraw forces if the situation improves.”
