Assam-Mizoram border dispute: Here’s what’s happening

In the last few weeks, a border dispute between the North Eastern states of Assam and Mizoram turned deadly, with at least six police officers losing their lives and at least 40 getting injured.

A 25 year old border battle simmered over now, leading to the clashes. Both states disagree over the ‘constitutional boundary’ of their respective states.

The border is between Assam's Cachar and Mizoram's Kolasib district. The two states also have disputes at the Mamit-Karimganj and Kolasib-Hailakandi borders.

Mizoram was earlier a part of the state of Assam, called Lushai Hills, it was split apart from the state in 1972, becoming a Union Territory and then becoming a state, 15 years later in 1987.

The Mizoram Home Minister alleges that “200 Assam Police personnel overran a duty post in Vairengte,” while Assam’s Chief Minister says “Mizoram Police used Light Machine Guns” against his state’s police officers.
