Clashes erupted along the Assam-Meghalaya interstate border area, with people from both sides using catapults, bows and arrows to attack each other.

The incident happened when villagers from Meghalaya gathered to harvest crops on a contested piece of land.

The clashes happened in Lapangap village along the boundary between Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district and Assam's West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. The clashes continued on Wednesday.

Police sources said extra forces were rushed to the area and the situation was brought under control.

The West Jaintia administration has rushed magistrates to the spot. An official in Meghalaya said that land belongs to Lapangap's people and they have been cultivating it.
