GUWAHATI: Sporadic incidents of violence were reported in Shillong even as blockades and counter blockades continued along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The Centre has approved the deployment of five companies of central armed police forces in Meghalaya following the violent protests in Shillong that left several people injured and vehicles damaged. A senior police official said, "A petrol bomb was hurled at a police outpost in Shillong, while three government vehicles and a motorcycle were set ablaze in Ri-Bhoi and another petrol bomb was lobbed at a government office in Southwest Khasi Hills. There are reports of petrol bombs being hurled at the ruling National People's Party office in Shillong. No one has been injured."

Traffic remained disrupted as protests at Jorabat continued to block vehicles bearing Meghalaya registration numbers. Even in Meghalaya there was a counter blockade. Petrol tankers from Assam refused to ply in Meghalaya unless security is ensured.

The Meghalaya HC had on Thursday taken suo motu cognisance of the August 19 incident. In its order, the bench directed that "more intensive steps need to be taken by the authorities immediately to apprehend the perpetrators of these incidents and bring them to book," and instructed the state to file a status report on the action taken by August 24, 2026.
