New Delhi/Guwahati: Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday signed a pact to resolve border disputes at six places in presence of Union home minister Amit Shah.

Shah said, "Today is a historic day for a conflict-less northeast. Since 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken several initiatives for peace, development, prosperity and cultural protection of the northeast."

He added, "After we inked an agreement with National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) in 2019, the state has become insurgency-free. We took up the issue of Bru-Reang settlement. We inked an agreement with Bodo outfits and the five-decade old problem was resolved."


Shah added, "On July 24, 2021, I visited Meghalaya and said Assam must show large-heartedness in resolving border disputes with its neighbours. Assam and Meghalaya have resolved six border disputes and the remaining 6 will be resolved soon."

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said, "The areas involves roughly 36 sqkm and both the states will share it equally. Survey of India will start demarcation of areas along with a joint team of both the states. "

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the remaining disputes will be resolved in 6-7 months."
