Ranoj Pegu, Assam's Minister for Education, said the state government will examine if private madrasas can be regulated under the Assam Non-Government Educational Institutions (Regulation and Management) Act, 2006.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati, Pegu said: "There is a law brought out in 2006 which has provisions for the regulation of non-government institutions. We will examine if private madrasas can be brought under this Act. Presently, all non-government schools are not covered under this Act." The Assam police had recently zeroed in on several teachers and clerics of madrasas for their alleged links with the Jehadi terror outfit. Following this, they have asked leading Muslims groups and boards of madrasas to keep a tab while engaging teachers from outside the state and ensure that their antecedents were checked.

Assam director general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta held a meeting with the groups and the madrasa boards recently. He asked the groups to verify the person's identity and submit the information to the police. A portal will be opened soon where groups would provide details of the madrasas and the teachers engaged by them.

The DGP has suggested that maths, science and English be taught in addition to religious education. The groups have sought six month's time for implementation of the same.
