Assam landslide: 3 killed, one injured as heavy rain triggers collapse

Guwahati: Three members of a family died, while another was injured in a landslide in Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday.

A senior police officer said the incident occurred in the Mathgharia area of the city while the family members were sleeping in their house.

“A couple and their daughter died in the landslide. The bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem,” he said.


Incessant rain since early Tuesday triggered the landslide. The official said the incident occurred at around 8 am.

Local Dimoria MLA Tapan Das, who rushed to the spot after the incident, said, “It is a very sad incident. We offer our condolences to the bereaved family. We will ensure that the survivor receives all due assistance.”

He said a risk assessment of other houses in the area was being carried out and that residents would be evacuated if needed.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially released the fourth phase of interim flood assistance of Rs 15,000 per household through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to 16,746 flood-affected families in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts.

A total of Rs 25.12 crore was transferred to the beneficiaries on Tuesday. With the release of the fourth instalment, the state government has so far transferred a cumulative Rs 175.64 crore in interim flood assistance, benefiting 1,17,095 households across the affected districts.

Speaking about the flood assistance, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the flood-affected people of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat for their resilience during the difficult period. He said that apart from direct financial assistance, the state government had taken several measures to support affected families, including assistance related to bank moratoriums and the settlement of insurance claims.

As part of post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation, the government has also undertaken extensive restoration of Anganwadi centres, namghars and schools, among other public infrastructure.

Around Rs 330 crore has been spent on flood reconstruction and related works, Sarma added.
