Assam Home Secretary Siladitya Chetia kills himself in hospital after wife's death

In a shocking incident Shiladitya Chetia, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer serving as secretary in the home and political departments in the Assam government, allegedly died by suicide.

He took the step soon after he heard about his wife's death in the hospital. His wife had been suffering from cancer.

Assam Director General of Police, G P Singh stated in X, “In an unfortunate turn of events, Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. Entire Assam Police family is in deep grief”.


Senior police officials said that Chetia was on leave for the past four months. “After the news of the death of his wife he sought time to pray beside the body of his wife. Soon gunshots were heard. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival”.

Chetia had served as the superintendent of police (SP) of Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts of the state.
