Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma heads to Manipur, to meet CM Biren Singh, MLAs today

With no signs of violence abating in Manipur, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit the state on Saturday on a peace mission.

Sarma, who is convenor of BJP-led anti-Congress alliance of regional parties -- North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), is likely to meet Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and other MLAs during his visit.

Sources said that Sarma has a connection with MLAs of both the Kuki and Meitei communities and this will come handy in the present situation when both the communities seem to be having trust deficit.


This comes after at least three people, including a woman were killed and two others injured by suspected militants in Manipur's Khoken village on Friday. The village lies on the boundary between Kangpokpi and Imphal West district.

According to the police, the extremists dressed in 'Khakhi' uniforms and were driving military vehicles when they came to the Khoken village early on Friday morning and fired upon the villagers with their automatic rifles.
