Assam govt targets vaccinating eligible population by August 15

Assam has a population of 3.20 Crore. As per the government there are around one crore people in the 44 years and above category and over one Crore 20 lakh in the 18 years to 44 years’ category.

Assam government has targeted to vaccinate the eligible population by August 15 this year. The government has announced financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh to women widowed due to COVID-19.

Assam has a population of 3.20 Crore. As per the government there are around one crore people in the 44 years and above category and over one Crore 20 lakh in the 18 years to 44 years’ category.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that from July 1 onwards Assam will get around 3.5 lakh vaccines per day. "We are expecting that eligible people will be inoculated by August 15 this year."


Sarma dedicated Chief Minister Sishu Seva Scheme to the service of the beneficiaries and handed over the cheques of financial assistance to few beneficiaries who lost both their parents due to COVID.

Under the scheme an amount to the tune of Rs. 7,81,200 would be parked in the bank as fixed deposit in the name of each beneficiary. A monthly financial assistance of Rs. 3500 which will be realised from the fixed deposit will be given to the beneficiaries till they attain 24 years of age. On completion of 24 years of age, the principal amount parked as fixed deposit against each beneficiary would be credited to their bank accounts.

Sarma said that for those women who have lost their husbands due to COVID, the State government would give Rs. 2.5 lakh as one-time financial support from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Besides, the widow will also be entitled to the benefits of “Orunodoi” scheme (Rs830 per month) along with a monthly widow pension under the ongoing Indira Miri Universal Widow Pension Scheme (Rs 300 per month).

Sarma said that Assam has taken to strategic vaccination where districts with high COVID cases were vaccinated on priority. “Without taking recourse to total lockdown we have dealt with this wave of COVID. We have ensured that under this model life and livelihood continues.”
