Assam government to confer 'Asom Baibhav Award' to Ratan Tata

The award function is on Monday. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Tata has expressed his inability to come owing to his health.

In 2017, the Board of Trustees of Tata Trust has informed that it has approved Rs 540 Crore for setting up of 3-level cancer care grid at state, capital and district levels.
With Assam government deciding to confer the 'Asom Baibhav Award', state’s highest civilian award, to industrialist Ratan Tata, the industrialist has expressed his inability to personally visit Assam on Monday to receive award.

The award function is on Monday. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Tata has expressed his inability to come owing to his health.

Tata in a letter to Sarma stated, “I GREATLY APPRECIATE AND AM DEEPLY TOUCHED BY THE DECISION OF THE GOVERNMENT OF ASSAM TO BESTOW ON ME THE ASSAM BAIBHAV AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2021.


I HAVE BEEN AN ADMIRER OF YOUR PERSONAL COMMITMENT TO THE WELLBEING OF THE ASSAMESE PEOPLE AND IT IS THEREFORE AN EXCEPTIONAL HONOUR TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD FROM YOU.

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING MY INABILITY TO PERSONALLY RECEIVE THE AWARD AT THE FUNCTION TO BE HELD IN GUWAHATI ON JANUARY 24TH AND FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO PRESENT IT TO ME AT A LATER DATE IN MUMBAI. IT WOULD BE A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU AND OUR OFFICES COULD WORK TOGETHER TO FIND A SUITABLE DATE FOR SUCH A MEETING”.

The project envisages investment of Rs 1400 Crore. Under the project a South Asian Cancer Research centre is also proposed to be set up, to undertake research on identifying reasons and develop treatment protocols with a focus on South Asia.
