Assam government will soon come up with drug rehabilitation policy.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting with the State Level Coordinating Agency (SLCA) on Drug Prevention, Assam as well as representatives from various private rehabilitation centres. Various rehabilitation measures for the de-addiction treatment and practices in Assam for drug users were discussed in the meeting.

Taking stock of the issues related to the rehabilitation of the addicted persons, the Chief Minister advocated for a drug rehabilitation policy for the state and asked the Health and Social Welfare department to prepare a draft of the said policy in consultation with various experts and stakeholders.


The Chief Minister also advocated for a scientific approach so that rehabilitated persons do not fall back into the habit of drug addiction again.

Along with ensuring right protocols for the drug de-addiction centres, the Chief Minister also advised the concerned officials to take steps for proper registration of the rehabilitation centre.

The Assam government has launched a tirade against illegal drugs trade. As per the state government, the size of illegal trade business is to the tune of Rs 5000 Crore annually. In the last two months, 874 cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and 1,493 drug peddlers arrested.

Recently Assam has burnt seized drugs worth Rs 163 crore in four different places.
