Assam government launches eviction drive to clear 397 acres of land from encroachers

Assam government on Monday launched an eviction drive to clear 397 acres of land from encroachers in Batardraba in Nagaon district.

Batadrava Than is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev (the 15th century saint-reformer of Assam).

The eviction drive is expected to be end in the next couple of days. In October this year over 1,000 notices were served asking people there to vacate the land.


Last during an eviction drive in Darrang district in police firing two people were killed. The Assam government constituted Sattra (vaishnavite monastery) Commission which found that around 1898.04 hectares of land disguised as Sattras were under encroachment. The commission in its interim report found that the highest encroachment has taken place in Barpeta district.

The commission submitted its report to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently. The Assam Government in fulfilment of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Election Promises and in response to various public complaints and prayers and complaints received from the Sattras and other religious institutions decided to set up a Commission to go into the factual position of the land belonging to the Sattras of Assam.
