Some people used bulldozers to demolish their own houses which were constructed on government land. Encroachers in Jengoni, Dhing, voluntarily demolished their homes and business establishments.
The eviction notice, issued by the district administration, targets illegal settlements on government land in Batadrava and Alitangani mouzas, including grazing reserves and designated market areas.
The encroachers themselves demolished around 171 illegal structures, including 51 residences and 120 business establishments, clearing 28 bighas of government land. Government now plans to clear a total 1,047 bighas of encroached government land. These areas include Balisatra Doomdoomia Bazar, Balisatra Veterinary Land, Rajabari Grant, Ahom Gaon, Lahkar Ghat, Roumaree Beel, and Batabari Reserve.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in X, “The TIDE is turning- encroachers who were earlier fighting our eviction drives are now supporting it. This is what happened in Nagaon today. AssamEvictions are lawful and are solely in the interest of Assam. The best way forward is Compliance over Confrontation.”
He added, “While we are doing our best to reclaim lost lands and restore Assam's pride, it is also imperative for our communities to be vigilant against any encroachment attempt and actively thwart such a move. Together, we will fight for and save Assam.”
Sarma added, “Following the eviction of 175 bighas encroached on VGR land at Nonke Japoriguri, Biswanath District Administration has launched a Tree Plantation & Wire Fencing Scheme under MGNREGA 2025-26. With an outlay of Rs 24.54 lakh and covering nearly 50 bighas of land, it's a remarkable step towards afforestation & a greener future”.
Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has petitioned the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to take suo motu cognisance of what he described as “continuous violations of human rights” by the state government against indigenous groups, minorities, and erosion-affected families through eviction drives and land acquisition measures.
Saikia alleged that thousands of families from communities including the Boro, Karbi, Garo, Ahom, Rabha, Deshi Muslims, tea garden workers, and Adivasis had been displaced over the past two years without rehabilitation or consultation.
The Assam government has launched a series of eviction drives. The Assam government has reclaimed 182 square kilometres of land from encroachers. Over 50, 000 people are evicted.
Around 21 illegal immigrants were pushed back from Sribhumi district on Tuesday. Sarma stated in X, “HIT where it hurts the most, send them back to their host. In two separate instances, we PUSHED BACK 21 illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators from the Sribhumi sector, further bolstering our anti- infiltration efforts. These drives WILL CONTINUE UNABATED".
The All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU), on Wednesday, announced a state-wide "Satyagraha" campaign from September 4 to September 23 seeking the expulsion of illegal Bangladesh immigrants from Assam and to ensure a permanent solution to the illegal infiltration issue in the state.
The agitation will begin with an 11-hour hunger strike at all district headquarters on September 4. This will be followed by protest demonstrations on September 16, and culminate in mass rallies in every district headquarters on September 23.
