Nagaon: Security personnel stand outside the 34 Battalion camp after a CRPF officer shot his two colleagues dead and injured another.
Guwahati: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer shot dead two of his colleagues and injured another before killing himself in Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday.

The firing took place around 7:30 am at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari when Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ballani Premabaram, who was deployed at the main gate, opened fire on his colleagues.

Officials said two CRPF jawans, Vishnu Prasad Baghel and Ramnawal Singh Yadav, were killed in the incident, while ASI Mane Govind Sripul was injured.

The injured jawan was taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

ASI Premabaram, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, later shot himself dead inside a barrack, officials said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Nagaon, Abotani Doley, told media persons, "On Tuesday at around 7:30 am, we received information through our PCR that a firing incident had taken place at the 34th Battalion camp in Katimari. Immediately, a team of police personnel, including me, rushed to the spot. Upon inquiry, it was learned that ASI Palembu Perabaram opened fire. Two of them died on the spot and one injured person has been shifted to GMCH, Guwahati. During the inquiry, it was also learned that the person was under the influence of alcohol and was suffering from depression."

A senior police officer said Premabaram was found without his assigned weapon. "He took an INSAS rifle from the guard room and opened fire as he approached the Quarter Guard.

The officer added, "Premabaram later entered Barrack B/171 and shot himself."
