Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks on the use of the word ‘Miya’ have triggered sharp reactions from Muslim leaders in the state. Sarma said the term is not unconstitutional and was coined by Bangladeshi-origin Muslims themselves, citing Supreme Court observations on demographic change. He also accused Congress of facilitating the settlement of ‘Miyan’ people in Assam, referring to the party as ‘Badan Barphukan’. Muslim leaders have condemned the statement, accusing the Chief Minister of repeatedly targeting Muslims.
