Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, demanding that the case related to the death of IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed be handed over to the CBI for investigation following the findings of the latest forensic report.

In a letter sent to West Bengal Chief Minister on June 17, 2024, Sarma requested her to hand over the case to the CBI for a transparent and fair investigation of the crime.

Faizan Ahmed was found dead in his hostel on 14th October, 2022. Though his death was claimed to be a case of suicide by the IIT authority, his bereaved parents observed injury marks on Faizan’s body. Moreover, in view of the direction of the Calcutta High Court, a second autopsy was carried out by exhuming late Faizan’s body. During the autopsy, a gunshot wound on the upper left side of the neck and a stab wound on the right side of Faizan’s neck was observed.

In view of the findings, Sarma requested his West Bengal counterpart to involve the Central agency (CBI) to find out the truth, bring the perpetrators of the crime to book and give the grief-stricken parents of the deceased justice.

On 10 October 2022, Sarma also wrote a letter to the CM West Bengal, requesting for a thorough inquiry into the death of Faizan.

Ahmed, 23, was found dead in his hostel room. However, his parents claimed that they had observed injury marks on his body.

His mother had moved the Calcutta High Court in May 2023, seeking the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death.

The court then ordered the exhumation of his remains and a second post-mortem examination to "bring out the truth behind his death". Ahmed, a resident of Tinsukia in Assam, was a third-year mechanical engineering student at IIT-Kharagpur.
