Assam CM urges calm amid unrest over Zubeen Garg case, warns against politicisation
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked citizens to be patient and trust the judicial process in the Zubeen Garg death investigation. He warned against politicizing the issue, stating that certain groups are creating unrest for personal...

Addressing reporters from New Delhi, Sarma said that in a democracy, only the judiciary has the authority to deliver justice. “The police and investigation agencies are doing their duty by gathering evidence, examining witnesses, and taking necessary actions to bring the case before the court,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed concern over what he described as a “disturbing atmosphere” being created in the name of justice for Zubeen Garg by certain groups “driven by personal interest.”
“Certain groups have created an unhealthy environment across Assam, and such actions will only push our state backward. It pains me to see that some individuals, driven by personal interests, have created fear and instability, threatening the peace, development, and prosperity that Assam has enjoyed over the past five years,” Sarma said.
He appealed to the public not to politicise the issue. “Death should not be politicised, one must not take it as an advantage ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. These elements want a Nepal-type of situation here,” he warned.
Citing examples from India’s past, Sarma reminded people that justice takes time through the judicial system. “Even after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the judiciary took its due course, and the process took almost two years before justice was delivered. Same was the case with Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, it was through the court that justice prevailed. Every case must pass through the judiciary,” he said.
The Chief Minister confirmed that an investigation related to the case is underway in Singapore. “The Ministry of External Affairs has informed the Singapore authorities that two officers from Assam Police will soon travel to the island nation,” Sarma said.
He added that Singapore’s administration had sought the names of the two police officers who would be visiting the country for discussions related to the ongoing probe.
Sarma also alleged that some political parties were attempting to fuel anger among Zubeen Garg’s admirers and the public. “They are playing with the sentiments of our youth. This causes irreparable harm to our state, much like what we witnessed during the CAA unrest,” he said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring justice through lawful means and appealed for calm to preserve Assam’s peace and stability.
