Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act is currently in effect in only four districts, and he mentioned that the Central government would explore the possibility of completely repealing it from the state.

Attending the 71st Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on Friday in Shillong, Sarma, a member of the Council dedicated to the economic and social development of the Northeastern part of the country, expressed gratitude to the current administration at the Centre for its relentless efforts in promoting the socioeconomic growth of the region.

Highlighting positive developments, he cited the Multidimensional Poverty Index 2024 by NITI Aayog, revealing a significant decline in Assam's multidimensional poverty from 36.97% in 2013-14 to 14.47% in 2022-23. Sarma attributed the state's positive developments to the prevailing peace, expressing confidence in a substantial Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth in the next financial year. He urged the Centre to formulate a new industrial policy for the Northeast to attract private investors.

Emphasizing the return of peace to Assam and the government's focus on addressing the aspirations of various communities, Sarma mentioned zero casualties among security personnel and civilians last year. He hoped that the Centre would consider repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act entirely from the state, which is currently applicable in only four districts.

Sarma also discussed improvements in the crime scenario, especially crimes against women, and highlighted infrastructure projects, including road development and investments in school infrastructure. Additionally, he spoke about Assam's efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in areas such as fish, egg, and milk production. Later in the day, the Chief Minister participated in the 11th Meeting of the North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) Society.
