Assam Cabinet announces examinations for students of classes 5 and 8 in all state-run schools

The Assam Cabinet on Friday announced that the state government will conduct examinations for students of classes 5 and 8 in all state-run schools.

If any student fails the annual examination then within two months, special exams will be held for failed students. In such cases, the teachers of the institution will take special care of the students so that they pass the examination, however, if the student still fails in the said examination, he/she will have to re-appear in the same class again.

Assam government has already amended the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act and following which all students in class 5 and 8 standard have to pass in their annual examinations for promotion.


Earlier in the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 a provision was made, wherein, from classes 1 to 8 standard the exams which are held every quarterly did not complement the pass or fail of any students.

The students were passed automatically to the next class.

However, in 2019 the act was amended and following this, if any students have not performed well in the examination he/she shall be eligible to be detained in the same class for the second year.

Assam state cabinet on October 7 decided that from now on all students must have to pass classes 5 and 8 in the exams to be held annually.
