The Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Zuha should be celebrated at home, the Assam government has said as part of new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Issued on Monday ahead of the festival on July 21, the state government said only five people - including the religious head – will be permitted to offer Namaz (ritual prayer) at mosques.

According to the directive, all other religious places will continue to remain closed for devotees.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) issued the revised and consolidated directive for both rural and urban areas. The orders will remain in force from 5 am of July 20 until further orders.

Five districts that have shown high positivity rates recently - Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Biswanath – have been declared total containment zones. There will be round-the-clock curfew in these districts.

In districts reporting moderate positivity rates - Goalpara and Morigaon - it will be from 1 pm to 5 am.
