Asim Munir’s ‘India a Mercedes, Pakistan a dumper truck’ remark a confession of Islamabad’s economic reality: Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday dismissed Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir’s recent comparison of the Indian and Pakistani economies as a “truck vs car” analogy, saying the comment was more of a confession than a jibe.

Speaking at the ET World Leaders Forum in Delhi, Singh underlined that India is building prosperity through development, while some neighbours are still trapped in conflict.

“Bharat’s economy is a Mercedes running on a highway like a Ferrari. Pakistan’s economy is a gravel-filled dump truck and if the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser, that is what Asim Munir said.” Singh remarked, adding that everyone knows what the answer to Pakistan General's question is.

"Everyone in Pakistan and around the world have trolled Asim Munir for this statement. They have said that if two nations attained independence at the same time and one nation was successful to make its economy like Ferrari due to its hard work and future-focussing strategies, while the other one is like a dumper truck, whose failure is it," Singh noted.

He added, “Asim Munir’s statement is a confession, it is not a troll statement. We know who runs Pakistan. We are focusing on development, not on war.”

The Defence Minister urged a mindset shift in the region. “The Chief of the Pakistan Army, knowingly or unknowingly, has pointed towards a tribal and predatory mentality that Pakistan has been a victim of since its inception. I feel, friends, that we must break this delusion of the Pakistani Army. Due to ‘Operation Sindoor,’ such a delusion should not have arisen in their minds in the first place. But we must ensure that alongside India’s prosperity, our culture, and our economic prosperity, our defense capabilities and the spirit to fight for our national honor remain equally strong. We must ensure that in our civilization, in our nation, that fighting spirit remains alive.”

On strengthening India’s defence capabilities, Singh said a strong military posture is central to national development. “Let’s hope our youth are not just becoming scientists but also fighters. If our defence capabilities are strong, no enemy will ever target us. I want to say that defence expenditure is part of development expenditure,” he emphasised.

Singh reiterated India’s vision is rooted in stability and progress. “Their prosperity lies with conflict. Ours lies with growth,” he said.
