Using Ashram flyover to commute between south Delhi, east Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad, is likely to turn into nightmare for commuters in the coming days. The PWD of the Delhi government has decided to close the flyover for 45 days as it gears up to start its integration work with the Ashram extension flyover from next week.

The Delhi traffic police has granted approval for temporarily closing down the flyover, a report by TOI quoted a PWD official as saying.

"They have allowed us to close the flyover and it will happen anytime between December 25 and 31,” the official said.

The integration work is likely to commence after December 25 and may finish by second week of February 2023.

Traffic police officials confirmed they have given permission to the PWD department for flyover closure for one and a half month.

As per the traffic officials, at least 3-4 lakh vehicles pass through the Ashram intersection everyday with major congestion seen during the peak hours. Due to the closure of the flyover, Barapullah flyover, Kalindi Kunj, Mathura Road and ITO could see dramatic rise in traffic volume.

The PWD has been working on extending the flyover and linking it with the Delhi Noida Direct Flyway for the past few years. The officials exuded confidence the work on the flyover will be completed by the end of January, having missed a November deadline.

Construction of an underpass at the Ashram intersection was completed by the Delhi government earlier this year.

Traffic police officials said they are in touch with the nodal agency and are discussing steps to ease the traffic flow. They have suggested re-carpeting of the roads on either side to make vehicular movement smooth.

“We can’t increase the width of the road but carpeting it would make the movement of vehicles smoother,” the official added. Some other measures are also being discussed.
