As Delhi G20 Summit ends, Prime Minister Modi pitches for expansion of UNSC’s permanent membership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said data and technology need to be shared as part of a human-centric approach to growth during his address at the third session of the G20 summit in Delhi on Sunday. He also sought expansion of the United Nations Security Council's permanent membership.

Later, while passing the G20 presidency baton to Brazil, he suggested that a virtual session of the grouping be held at the end of November to discuss progress on proposals made at the Delhi summit.

"As you all know, India has the duty of presiding over G20 till November. So, two and a half months are still left," he said in his concluding remarks at the G20 summit. "In these two days, you all have stated several things, given suggestions and voiced several proposals. It is our responsibility that the suggestions which have come up are looked at again to see how their progress can be expedited. It is my proposal that we hold another virtual session of G20 in November-end. In that session we can examine the proposals mooted here."


The Prime Minister said there is a need to take another look at the number of permanent Security Council members, given the changed world scenario since the establishment of the UN. "The realities of the new global structure should be reflected (in the UNSC)," he said. While declaring the summit closed, Modi said, "I am sure the roadmap of One Earth, One Family, One Future will be smooth. Let there be hope and peace in the whole world. With these good wishes on behalf of 140 crore Indians, I thank all of you."

The PM looked forward to Brazil's G20 presidency.

"We have unwavering faith that they will lead with dedication, vision and will further global unity as well as prosperity," he posted on X.

"India assures all possible cooperation to Brazil during their upcoming G20 presidency," he wrote.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Prime Minister had expressed his views at the third session of the G20 summit focused on One Future.

"(I) emphasised on the need of the hour being to look beyond the idea of a Global Village and make the vision of a Global Family a reality," he said on X. "Simply having a GDP-centric approach is outdated. Time has come to adopt a human-centric vision of progress. India has been making several efforts in this regard, particularly in areas relating to data and technology. We must do whatever we can to use AI for socio-economic development. As we pursue our development trajectories, we must keep our focus on sustainability and stability. This will ensure empowerment of the marginalised."

Prime Minister Modi said India has much that it can share with the world, including data from the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission, underlining this as a sign of his commitment to the human-centric approach.

Steps in this direction include G20 principles on harnessing data for development, data for development capacity building initiatives for the Global South as well as the Startup 20 engagement group.

Prime Minister Modi also suggested that a framework for Responsible Human-Centric AI Governance be prepared. He touched upon the challenges posed by cybercrime and aspects of cryptocurrency, saying that the latter had emerged as an area that impacts social order as well as monetary and financial stability.

Modi called for amplifying the mandate of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). These decisions should be "immediate and effective," he said.
