In what may spell further trouble for the Arvind Kejriwal government, CBI is investigating the purchase of 1,000 air-conditioned low-floor buses by the Delhi government in 2020.

People in the know said that a preliminary enquiry (PE) was launched by the agency on January 27 this year.

"The investigation is on. Requisite information gathered during the preliminary enquiry is being examined," a source said on the condition of anonymity.

A PE ascertains whether a cognisable offence is made out. As per available information, the agency is yet to register an FIR in the case.

The PE was lodged at the behest of the Union home ministry which in August last year recommended a CBI probe.

Additional secretary of the ministry, Govind Mohan, had informed the then Delhi chief secretary Vijay Kumar Dev about the recommendation of a CBI probe through a letter on August 16, 2021.

Alleging corruption in the annual maintenance contract of the buses proposed to be purchased, BJP and Congress had demanded a CBI probe in the case. The AAP government has consistently denied accusations of corruption.
