Guwahati: With the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) facing resistance and violent protests, Arunachal Pradesh deputy chief minister Chowna Mein said progress has been made in the state's hydropower sector and stressed the need to explore the state's resources responsibly to support economic growth and create greater opportunities for people.

Prohibitory orders were imposed following protests against the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Dam. Violent protests took place at Pasighat in East Siang district where the residences of political leaders were attacked and an NHPC office was set on fire. The violence, which began on Friday, continued until Saturday morning last week. The protesters sought the release of those arrested following the Siang protest. More than 75 individuals have been arrested or detained in Arunachal Pradesh in connection with the protests against the project. On October 26, there was a protest against the SUMP dam in Arunachal Pradesh. Protesters are now also opposing the 1,605-MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project (SUHEP), known as the Menga Dam.

On the proposed SUMP, he reiterated the government's openness to hold dialogue with all stakeholders, including community organisations, student bodies, civil society groups and those expressing concern about the project. He said democratic differences must be addressed through constructive engagement, informed discussions and mutual understanding.

He underscored the importance of expert consultations and public awareness. He urged young people to channel their talent towards building a peaceful, progressive and developed Arunachal Pradesh.
