While Varinder Singh was brought to Assam on Monday, the other seven, including Amritpal's uncle Harjit Singh, were brought in the past one week.
The Dibrugarh jail in Upper Assam has multi-layer security. While the elite Black Panther commandos of Assam Police are maintaining internal security, the inner security is handled by the CRPF, Assam Police and prison guards.
On Sunday, four people - Daljeet Kalsi, Basant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala and Bhagwant Singh were brought to Dibrugarh. Harjeet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal and Gurinder Pal Singh were flown in from Punjab on Tuesday last week.
All of them are charged under the National Security Act, Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said.
"No specific reason was cited for choosing the Dibrugarh jail to lodge these people ... There are no inputs on any more transfer of prisoners as of now," Pegu told reporters.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier told media persons in New Delhi that at times police bring prisoners from one state to another for security reasons. "Earlier we had sent prisoners from Assam to Bihar, and this is police-to-police cooperation. I have nothing to say on this," he said.
