Another bridge collapses in Bihar, 5th incident in 11 days

Another bridge has collapsed in Bihar, the fifth such incident in the state in last 11 days. According to reports, on Friday, a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Madhubani.

The bridge was under construction on Bhutahi river.

Just a day before, on Thursday, a bridge in the Kishanganj district had collapsed. The 70-meter-long and 12-meter-wide structure in Bahadurganj block could not withstand heavy rainfall, which led to a rapid increase in water levels. This caused one of its pillars to fail.


"The bridge was built in 2011 over Madiya, a small tributary that connects the Kankai river to the Mahananda. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area in Nepal has led to a sudden rise in the water level. One of the pillars of the bridge could not withstand the strong current," District Magistrate Tushar Singla was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the incident.

Last week, three other bridge collapses occurred in Bihar's Araria, Siwan, and Araria districts.

In recent years, there have been multiple incidents of bridge collapses in the state, raising concerns about the quality of public infrastructure. Although these incidents have not resulted in any fatalities, they have significantly worried the local residents.

Friday's bridge collapse incident will further fuel the fire of ongoing political row that erupted after a canopy fell in India's busiest Delhi airport, killing a person and injuring several others.

The opposition Congress party has blamed BJP-led govt at the Center blaming it for 'shoddy' infrastructure.
