Andhra Pradesh becomes first state in India to introduce gratuity for Asha workers: Here’s what it means for them
Andhra Pradesh has become the first state in India to introduce gratuity payments for Asha workers, fulfilling a key election promise made by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The move aims to improve the financial security and working conditions of these frontline health workers.

Highest Salary for Asha Workers

In addition to gratuity, Andhra Pradesh now offers the highest salary for Asha workers in the country. They receive a monthly payment of Rs 10,000, which is significantly higher than in other states. In comparison, Asha workers in Uttar Pradesh earn Rs 750 per month, while those in West Bengal and Delhi receive Rs 3,000. In Kerala, the salary is Rs 5,000, and in Telangana, it is Rs 7,500.

Gratuity and Maternity Benefits

Asha workers who complete 30 years of service will be eligible for a gratuity payment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh. The government has also introduced maternity leave benefits, approving 180 days of leave as working days. This ensures that eligible workers receive Rs 60,000 in salary during their leave period.

Additional Post-Retirement Benefits

The Andhra Pradesh government has assured additional post-retirement benefits for Asha workers. They will receive priority in auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) recruitment and have access to various social security schemes. These measures aim to support Asha workers even after their retirement.

Government’s Commitment to Asha Workers

Chief Minister Naidu approved these decisions during a review meeting of the state health department. The government stated that these steps acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Asha workers, who play a crucial role in community healthcare.

Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav highlighted that these benefits recognise the contribution of Asha workers and ensure better financial stability for them.
