India and China share a 3,488-kilometre border passing through four states and a Union Territory.
The home minister had visited Kibithu, a border village in Arunachal Pradesh, in April 2023 to launch the programme. The scheme, announced that year, is meant for development of villages along the India-China border on the Line of Actual Control. A total of ₹4,800 crore, including ₹2,500 crore exclusively for road connectivity, was allocated for 2022-23 to 2025-26.
In 2023-24, MHA sanctioned 113 road projects worth ₹2,420.97 crore in Arunachal, Sikkim and Uttarakhand. The road projects are expected to boost connectivity along the India-China border and promote tourism.
