A nationwide digital project tracing Lord Krishna’s journey from Mathura to Dwarka will go live on January 14, coinciding with Makar Sankranti. The initiative will digitally document more than 500 ancient temples, manuscripts and cultural sites linked to Krishna across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Assam. Launched by social and cultural organisation Sanatan Wisdom, the project aims to bring research, history and living traditions together on one public digital platform, a NBT report stated.

The launch comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the country to draw lessons from India’s cultural journey of the past thousand years. He made the remarks while addressing the Somnath Swabhiman Parv at Prabhas Patan in Gujarat.

The Prime Minister was participating in events marking 1,000 years since repeated attacks on the Somnath temple. During the programme, he described the shrine as a symbol of faith, self-respect and cultural resilience.

The digital archive will document the cultural and historical legacy associated with Lord Krishna. The platform will compile material linked to more than 500 temples, ancient texts, literary references and cultural sites connected to Krishna.

The documentation spans several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Assam. The focus is on research-based material drawn from historical records, religious literature and regional traditions that reflect Krishna’s cultural presence.

Field research has already been carried out at key locations such as the Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain. Further documentation work is ongoing in the Mathura–Vrindavan region, which remains a major centre of Krishna-related traditions.

Another part of the project, called “Krishna Pathey”, traces and maps routes associated with Krishna’s journey from Mathura to Dwarka. This section covers several pilgrimage and heritage sites believed to be linked to that journey.

The project includes references from ancient manuscripts, folk traditions and mentions found in classical and medieval Sanskrit literature. The organisation said, the aim is to present Krishna’s influence not just through monuments, but also through stories, texts and living traditions that have shaped cultural practices over centuries.

Devrishi, philosopher, spiritual researcher and co-founder of Sanatan Wisdom, said the project is designed for public access, not just academic use.

“We do not want this research to remain confined to files and archives. The objective is to make it accessible to the wider public,” he said. “This is why we are also developing a 108-episode documentary series, so that research-based information can move beyond academic circles and reach a global audience.”

He added that the content will be made available in multiple languages to reach readers beyond India.

“Texts associated with Krishna will also be digitised and translated into different languages, so that the content can be accessed by readers outside India as well,” Devrishi said.

The digital platform will offer multilingual content, interactive maps and reference material for both academic researchers and general readers.
