A 33-year-old police head constable, Thippanna Alugur, died by suicide in Bengaluru on Friday night, leaving behind a note that blamed his wife, Parvati, and her father, Yamunappa, for harassment and torture that led to his death.

Thippanna, a resident of Electronic City, was attached to the Hulimavu police station (Law and Order). He hailed from Handiganuru village near Sindhagi town in Vijayapura district in North Karnataka.

Thippanna's last words

Thippanna had been married to Parvati from his hometown for three years, and the couple had no children.

On Friday, Thippanna attended his first shift (8 am to 2 pm) at the police station before returning home. A heated argument ensued between Thippanna and Parvati, following which Yamunappa allegedly called Thippanna over the phone and abused him.

According to Thippanna's death note, Yamunappa called him at 7:26 pm and spoke for 14 minutes, threatening him and telling him to die. The note stated that Yamunappa had said that Thippanna's death would allow his daughter (Parvati) to live in peace.

The aftermath

Thippanna's body was found on the railway tracks between Heelalige railway station and Carmelaram railway gate. Passersby alerted the railway police around 8 pm on Friday after discovering the body. Thippanna was in his police uniform when he took the extreme step.

In his death note, Thippanna also requested his batchmate, Malappa, who is attached to the Karnataka State Reserve Police, to collect his 'Cheeta' bike parked near a lake close to Huskur railway track. The 'Cheeta' motorbike is a vehicle provided by the government to constables and police constables for patrolling purposes.

Thippanna's mother, Basamma Alugur, has filed a complaint with the Byappanahalli railway police, accusing her daughter-in-law, Parvati, and son-in-law, Yamunappa, of abetting her son's death by torture and harassment. The police have stated that they will issue notices to the accused persons, directing them to appear for a statement.

This incident comes close on the heels of the suicide of city-based techie Subhash Atul, who also levelled allegations against his wife and in-laws for abetting his death.
