Bill to declare amaravati as AP capital to be introduced in LS tomorrow
The bill proposes to amend section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which had originally designated Hyderabad as the common capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period not exceeding 10 years.

After this transitional period, the Act required Andhra Pradesh to establish a new capital. The amendment explicitly names Amaravati as the successor state’s capital and clarifies that “Amaravati” includes all areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.
The move follows a resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, 2026, requesting the Centre to amend the law to incorporate Amaravati as the state capital. Over the years, the state government has undertaken extensive planning, consultation, and infrastructural development in Amaravati to prepare it as the administrative and legislative hub.

The amendment is proposed to be effective retrospectively from June 2, 2024, providing legal clarity on the status of Amaravati as the capital, and formally ending years of uncertainty since the bifurcation of the state and Hyderabad’s designation as the shared capital.
