Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that his government is making every effort possible to bring life in Manipur back to normal, and emphasised that there is a need for dialogue to build a bridge of trust between the hills and the valley.

On his first visit to Manipur since the ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, Modi landed in Imphal in the morning and travelled by road to Churachandpur, 65 km from the state capital, where he met and interacted with people who were displaced due to the violence and are now living in relief camps.

Later, speaking at an event held at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal, Modi congratulated Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal's interim PM.

In Churachandpur, the PM laid foundation stones for development projects worth more than Rs 7,300 crore, while at the event in Imphal, he inaugurated projects worth over ₹1,200 cr.

The Prime Minister, who has been under fire from opposition parties for not visiting the state after the violence began more than two years ago, said he stands with the people and that the government is with Manipur.

"The land and region of Manipur is the soil of hope and aspiration," but unfortunately, violence had gripped this remarkable area, Modi said at a rally in Churachandpur. Referring to his meeting with the people displaced, he said: "Following this interaction, I find a new dawn of hope and trust is arriving in Manipur."

Establishing peace is essential for development in any region and over the past 11 years, many long-standing conflicts and disputes in the Northeast have been resolved, Modi said, adding: "People have chosen the path of peace and prioritised development".

Dialogues have taken place recently with various groups in the hills and valley regions, he said. These efforts are part of the government's approach, which emphasises dialogue, respect and mutual understanding to establish peace, he said, and appealed to all organisations to move forward on the path of peace and fulfil their aspirations.
