Kolkata: A court in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to life imprisonment in the murder of a father-son duo during violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April this year.

A day earlier, the court in Jangipur held the 13 guilty of murdering Haragobindo Das and his son, Chandan Das, and convicted them under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including for mob lynching and rioting.

The West Bengal government had set up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the double murder. In June, the SIT submitted a 983-page chargesheet in the Jangipur court against the 13 accused.

"The court has found all 13 accused guilty and imprisoned them for life. This is only the second conviction in the country under section 103(2) BNS (death due to mob lynching) since the new criminal laws were introduced," the Bengal Police said.

"West Bengal Police, contrary to sustained and provocative misinformation spread by certain vested interests to trigger communal unrest, has always remained committed to its policy of zero-tolerance regarding attempts to fuel communal disharmony," the police said.
