Videos from the crash site showed the intense fire and multiple explosions had severely damaged the aircraft, making visual identification difficult in the immediate aftermath. Ajit Pawar’s identity was later confirmed through personal belongings.
The body of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was identified at the crash site on Wednesday through the wristwatch he was wearing, as authorities continued recovery and investigation work after the fatal aircraft accident at Baramati airport.

Rescue teams and local police reached the site within minutes of the crash, but the Learjet 45 was already engulfed in flames. There were five people on board, including Ajit Pawar, two personal staff members and two crew, and none survived. The charter plane, en route from Mumbai to Baramati, crash-landed around 8.45 am.
Forensic teams were brought in to assist with the recovery and formal identification process. Officials said the remains have been sent for further examination as per standard protocol.

The confirmation of Pawar’s identity has deepened the shock across Baramati and Maharashtra, where he was a key political figure and a dominant presence in the region’s public life.
Ajit Pawar, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a key political figure in Baramati, had long been involved in state and local governance, including infrastructure development and cooperative sector issues in the region. The Pawar family, particularly the relationship between Ajit and his uncle Sharad Pawar, has seen major political divisions in recent years, leading to a split in the NCP.
