"AITC's party constitution will undergo changes as it continuously expands its footprint nationally. Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee will take the final decision on the matter. Certain changes will be brought in the structure of the party working committee. At the moment, there are 21 members. It will be increased as the party spreads its network in Meghalaya, Tripura, Goa and Assam," a AITC insider told ET.
"The DNA of the party won't change, but certain things in the party's constitution will change. We have discussed ways and the final approval will be given by party supremo Mamata Banerjee," said Derek O'brien.
Changing the party constitution is a significant move in line with AITC's ambition. The newly constituted working committee will also accommodate leaders from Hindi heartland - one of the important focuses of the party. Leaders from western region too are likely to be inducted. However, Banerjee will remain the only one with 'veto power'.
"As Trinamool aims to become a party with nationwide presence in the coming days, the working committee will also induct more members from other states where it has expanded. The next working committee meeting will be held in New Delhi, as the party expands its national footprint ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls," the insider said.
Banerjee on Monday chaired a working committee meeting of her party at her residence in Kolkata with party MPs, MLAs and leaders from Bengal, Goa, Meghalaya and Tripura.
