Air Pollution: Noida's AQI crosses 'hazardous' level at 695

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Noida's sector 62 on Thursday touched 695, entering into the 'hazardous' category. This has led to the city topping the most polluted list.

Delhi pollution: NCR turns into 'gas chamber' with AQI 695 recorded in Noida Sector-62
The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Noida's sector 62 on Thursday touched 695 in the afternoon, entering into the 'hazardous' category, according to aqicn.org.

After this, Noida has taken the top spot as the most polluted city.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, and 401 and 500 severe.

While in the national capital, AQI was in 'severe' zone with a persistent smoky haze blanketing the city for the third consecutive day.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a tool for effective communication of air quality status to people in terms that are easy to understand. It transforms complex air quality data on various pollutants into a single number (index value), nomenclature, and colour.

Amid a surge in farm fires and unfavourable weather conditions, scientists have warned of a spike in the pollution levels in the Delhi-NCR region in the next two weeks.

Unfavourable meteorological conditions and a cocktail of emissions from firecrackers and paddy straw burning, in addition to local sources of pollution, push the Delhi-NCR's air quality to hazardous levels during winter.

According to an analysis conducted by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the capital experiences peak pollution from November 1 to November 15, when the number of stubble burning incidents in Punjab and Haryana goes up.
