AICC team which visited Tripura on Monday to see the poll related violence sought an independent inquiry into the series of political violence before and after the June 23 by-elections to the four assembly seats.

The three-member delegation of MPs, led by its Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury visited the hospital where the injured Congress workers including state party President Birajit Sinha are now being medically treated and then met Chief Minister Manik Saha.

Ranjan said that “Chief Minister assured us to restore the law and order,” the Congress leader said and informed that they requested Saha to punish the attackers and provide compensation to the attacked Congress men and women and their properties.


“Congress President Sonia Gandhi and central party leaders have given full focus towards Tripura to win the early next year’s assembly elections. Congress leaders and workers would not cow down to the attack and violence unleashed by the ruling BJP.

Gaurav Gogoi, Lok Sabha MP another member of the delegation said, “We have told the Chief Minister that Tripura image is being tarnished by this political violence.”

Sudip Roy Barman, who was elected in the June 23 by-election from the Agartala Assembly seat, said that Tripura Congress President Birajit Sinha and 14 other Congress workers were injured following the attack of the BJP workers on Sunday. He prior to polls Barman was attacked and he was hospitalised.

On Sunday Congress Bhavan was attacked in Agartala with sticks. At least ten motor bikes and few cars parked in front of Congress Bhavan were damaged.

On Sunday BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacherjee said that at least 13 party workers including Agartala Municipal Corporation Corporator Shilpi Sen and her daughter were injured.

The BJP wrested three out of four seats in the Tripura bypolls. Tripura chief minister Manik Saha won the assembly poll from the Town Bardowali constituency.
