In a bid to tackle the scorching summer heat, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police has unveiled an unique solution – 'AC helmets.' As per a TOI report, a video has gone viral on socia media in which a Constable Divyarajsinh Rana and five fellow constables can be seen wearing these innovative helmets while efficiently managing traffic in Ahmedabad. As part of the trial phase, the localities of Pirana, Thakkar Nagar, and Nana Chiloda in Ahmedabad have been selected for this initiative, police official confirmed TOI.

What exactly are these 'AC helmets'?
These helmets sport a distinctive design, featuring a plastic top equipped with a built-in fan-like structure. The power source for these cooling marvels is a battery pack comfortably worn by the traffic police personnel around their waist. Impressively, these helmets can effectively operate for up to 8 hours on a single full charge. Beyond providing a cooling breeze, they also shield the Ahmedabad traffic police from dust and pollutants. Interestingly, these helmets are slightly heavier by 500 grams compared to the regular riding helmets.

The 'AC helmet' distinguishes itself with its slim plastic top, differing from the traditional riding helmets. It incorporates a fan mechanism alongside several supplementary components.

Safin Hasan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic East, Ahmedabad, told TOI, "The AC helmets were handed to me by senior authorities for feedback. After careful evaluation, we zeroed in on three locations – Pirana Crossroads, Thakkarnagar char rasta, and Nana Chiloda Circle. These sites witness high levels of pollution and traffic congestion. Enduring eight-hour shifts under such conditions, with pollution and noise, takes a toll on the body, particularly at Pirana crossroad due to its proximity to a dumping yard."

He further elaborated, "We initially experimented with cartridge masks before introducing the AC helmets, but unfortunately, they didn't yield satisfactory results and even led to breathing issues for our officers."

The trial phase for these 'AC helmets' commenced on August 10, 2023. If the pilot experiment gets successful, the 'AC helmets' will be distributed to all traffic officers in Ahmedabad.
