After peace talks, Mizoram again appeals to Assam to open National Highway 306

The Mizoram government on Saturday appealed that traffic be allowed on the highway from Assam, saying that the state was facing an acute shortage of medicines, including for the treatment of Covid-19.

Assam and Mizoram on Thursday agreed to maintain peace along their border areas which had seen violent clashes on July 26. But movement along NH 306 is still affected due to blockades by some organisations. Also, truckers are unwilling to ply citing security concerns.

Despite Assam withdrawing travel advisory, truckers are not moving to Mizoram, said R Lalthangliana, Mizoram's health minister.


"The supply of several medicines - being used in the treatment of Covid patients - has been badly hit. A lot of people are not getting life-saving medicines, which may increase the number of deaths," he told reporters in Aizawl. "This act of arrogance is in clear violation of basic human rights ... Covid kits and other materials are stuck. Granted under the PM-Cares Fund, the material for oxygen plants is also not able to reach. As Assam and Mizoram have both decided to restore peace, we urge the restoration of the vehicular movement immediately," he added.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday made an appeal to resume the movement of trucks.

Mizoram had earlier stated that railway tracks linked to the state were damaged. It had also sought intervention by the Centre.
