After Modi shrinks convoy, ministers and CMs follow suit in fuel conservation push

New Delhi: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reduced his security detail and downsized the number of vehicles in his convoy, several Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states cut the size of their security convoys to set an example for fuel conservation.

Following the PM's lead, Union home minister Amit Shah and defence minister Rajnath Singh also reduced their convoy fleets by more than half. Union jal shakti minister CR Paatil voluntarily decided to stop using pilot and escort vehicles. Similar steps have been taken by his Cabinet colleagues Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jitendra Singh and others.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath directed an immediate 50% reduction in the number of vehicles accompanying him and his ministers. Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav announced that he would use a minimum number of vehicles in his convoy and asked his ministerial colleagues to do the same. He also encouraged people to use public transport. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced limits on official vehicles used by ministers, MLAs and other public representatives.

She urged Delhiites to adopt carpooling and make greater use of buses and metro services. Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma similarly directed that his convoy be minimised. He also instructed all officials and public representatives, including the chief secretary, to follow similar practices. The Maharashtra government has directed all ministers to obtain prior approval from CM Devendra Fadnavis before using aircraft for official travel.

Several governors have also taken steps to reduce travel and encourage the use of public transport.

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu said his government would unveil precautionary measures within two days to mitigate the impact of the West Asia conflict. Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai said he has reduced the size of his convoy and that there will be a special focus on the use of electric vehicles in the future.
