Chokepoint facilitates passage of about 20% of global oil, LNG, LPG & other petro products
India is cautiously hopeful as Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi following his Oman visit signalled "safe transit" through the Strait of Hormuz. With renewed focus on maritime stability, Araghchi noted that discussions in Oman centred on ensuring "safe transit" through the critical chokepoint. India is keeping a close watch on Iran-Oman dialogue that could ultimately lead to hassle free transit through the Strait.

In a post on X, Araghchi described the talks as "important", highlighting both bilateral issues and broader regional developments. "As the only Hormuz littoral states, our focus included ways to ensure safe transit that is to benefit all dear neighbours and the world," he said, adding that "our neighbours are our priority".

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical, narrow chokepoint, between Iran and Oman, separating the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman. As the world's most vital maritime oil chokepoint, it facilitates the passage of approximately 20% of global oil, along with LNG, LPG and other petroleum-related products.

Oman is re-emerging as a mediator in talks with the US, given its neutral approach. Oman is India's oldest strategic partner in the Gulf region and the two share deep civilisational bonds. Iran's trust in Pakistan is eroding due to its attempts to accommodate US demands for a peace deal, according to sources.

India has managed to move its vessels through the Strait of Hormuz in recent days following intense diplomacy with Tehran, though some vessels have occasionally been attacked. Of late, however, the passage of Indian-flagged ships through the strait has slowed.
