After Gorukhuti, Assam government has begun an eviction drive in Lumding Reserve forest

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that from 2012 trees falling started in the forest and ginger cultivation started. Yearly around 25 Crore ginger trade is done from this forest. “Officials are talking and peacefully the people are leaving the forest.”

Recently there were violent clashes between local people and police which resulted in the death of two people and injury to 15 policemen during the eviction drive at Gorukhuti in the Dholpur in Darrang.
After Gorukhuti in Darrang district, Assam government has started an eviction drive in Lumding Reserve forest.

Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Eviction has started and around 1000 have voluntarily left the forest after the government has asked them to vacate.”

Asserting that no one settled there 100 years back, he said, “People from Nagaon, Barpeta and Dhubri have settled there and they have been informed that a person Nazrul has brought them there. An FIR is filed against this person.”


Sarma said that from 2012 trees falling started in the forest and ginger cultivation started. Yearly around 25 Crore ginger trade is done from this forest. “Officials are talking and peacefully the people are leaving the forest.”

The Assam government will soon start a survey of land in the char (riverine) areas of the state.

Sarma earlier added, “In Lumding reserve forest we have found that three businessmen have initiated ginger cultivation; they brought people and settled there. They are making these people work like bonded labour. We will publish a white paper on Lumding reserve forest”.
