4.0 magnitude earthquake hits Delhi-NCR, strong tremors felt across north India; people recount horror
Earthquake in Bihar: An earthquake of strength 4.0 on the Richter Scale hit Siwan, Bihar at 08:02 IST today, hours after quake of similar magnitude rocked parts of Delhi-NCR.

As per National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake in Bihar had a depth of 10 Km. "EQ of M: 4.0, On: 17/02/2025 08:02:08 IST, Lat: 25.93 N, Long: 84.42 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Siwan, Bihar," said NCS' statement on X.

Previously around 5:36 am, an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude rocked parts of Delhi-NCR early on Monday, the National Center for Seismology said. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.


The earthquake, with its epicentre in New Delhi, struck at a depth of five kilometres at 5:36 am, it said in a post on X.

The epicentre was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, an official told PTI.

That region, which has a lake nearby, has been experiencing smaller, low-magnitude quakes once every two to three years. It recorded an earthquake of 3.3 magnitude in 2015, he said.

A loud sound was also heard when the earthquake hit, the official added.

The strong tremors triggered by the earthquake prompted residents of several high-rise buildings in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad to rush out.

Hours before, an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale hit Delhi-NCR early Monday at a depth of 5 km.

The strong tremors were felt at 5:36 AM. The sudden jolts prompted residents to rush out of their homes in panic.

After the earthquake struck Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) areas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged residents of Delhi and surrounding areas to stay calm and follow safety protocols.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister also advised everyone to remain alert for potential aftershocks.

"Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," PM Modi said.
