After successful revamp of Chandi Chowk area, the Delhi government is now planning a major redevelopment project for Kirti Nagar, Kamla Nagar, and Lajpat Nagar. As per a TOI report, the government has asked the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) to draft a comprehensive proposal for the revamp. The proposal will encompass the details of a design competition and the modalities involved in this endeavor.

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, appointed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to lead this initiative earlier this year. Notably, the decision to focus on these three markets during the first phase comes after the government's previous announcement to revamp five markets. The subsequent phases will address Sarojini Nagar, under the jurisdiction of the New Delhi Municipal Council, and Khari Baoli, renowned for its bustling wholesale trade in grains, dry fruits, and spices.

In a recent review meeting attended by representatives from the industries department, urban development department, and MCD, SPA received the mandate to prepare a detailed proposal. This proposal will consider the existing condition of the markets, input from traders' associations, and stakeholders' feedback. The aim is to ensure transparency by providing clear boundaries and maps for each market in the proposed redevelopment areas.

An official involved in the process told TOI, "We have told SPA to ensure that the proposal also includes the boundaries of each market along with their maps so that there is clarity on the proposed area that will be taken up."

An official also noted that the consultant agency chosen through the design competition will have their remuneration adjusted based on the prize money they receive. Following approval by the Chief Engineer of MCD, the redevelopment blueprint will be forwarded to the competent authority for final endorsement. Subsequently, the Delhi government will allocate funds for the project, and the design competition will commence.
