India has raised an alarm three days after the Taliban formed an all-Pashtun and all-male government, and told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the Afghanistan situation continued to remain very fragile and a was concern for New Delhi.

This was the first statement by India in the UNSC since the Taliban announced the government led by its senior leaders. Several ministers, including the interior minister, named by the Taliban are globally designated terrorists.

“As its immediate neighbour and a friend to its people, the current situation is of direct concern to us,” India's permanent representative to the UN, TS Tirumurti, said during a debate at the UNSC on Afghanistan early Friday.

“Uncertainties abound about the future of the Afghan people, as well as about sustaining and building on the gains achieved over the last two decades. In this context, we reiterate the need for the voices of Afghan women to be heard,” Tirumurti said.

Tirumurti stressed the need for the “aspirations of Afghan children to be realised and the rights of minorities to be protected”. He said, “We call on humanitarian assistance to be provided urgently and underline the need to provide unhindered access to the UN and other agencies in this regard.”

He reiterated, “India calls for inclusive dispensation in Afghanistan, which represents all sections of Afghan society. A broad-based, inclusive and representative formation attained via inclusive negotiated political settlement would gain greater international acceptability and legitimacy.”

Earlier on Thursday, the five-nation BRICS Summit held under India’s chairship called for preventing attempts by various terror groups to use the territory of Afghanistan to carry out attacks against other countries and pitched for an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue to ensure peace and stability in that country.
